Catchers Who Alter Throwing Mechanics

Throwing Problems in Baseball

In our new baseball and softball mental game video, Dr. Cohn discusses why some ball players go to a safe throw in games but throw freely in practice.

Here’s the question Dr. Patrick Cohn answers this week:

Why do ball players go to a different throw in game situations compared to what they are capable of doing in practice?

Robert, a ball player’s parent, said:

“My son is a catcher. He is 16 years old and throws 85 mph in practice, but in a game situation he is lucky to throw 60 mph… He over throws and under throws both to 1st and 3rd base. I’m not sure what to do… When he is not trying to be careful he throws like a stud, but in games he is so worried about making mistakes.”

“What can I do to help him”

Fear of failure prevents ball players form using their normal, confident throw in games. What is the underlying challenge in game situations?

Watch the video to learn more about what Dr. Cohn says about the underlying issues and what ball players have to do to regain confidence in throwing.
